I was the guy who was weak, 40lbs overweight, and without any clear sense of direction.

I know what it’s like to feel frustrated on the course and in the gym. I’ve been where you are—struggling to make progress and unsure where to start. That’s why I’m so passionate about helping golfers, like you, transform their game and their body. I understand the challenges firsthand and have worked my way to becoming stronger, hitting longer, and playing without pain.

I'm Matt — Doctor of Physical Therapy and Golf Performance Coach

With a background in strength & conditioning and love for golf, I understand the physical demands both on and off the course. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I blend my educational background with my personal journey—losing 40lbs, gaining strength, and improving my game. My mission is to help golfers, like you, get the most out of your body to play strong, hit long, and enjoy the game forever.

That was me not too long ago. In fact, at first, I didn’t enjoy spending time in the gym at all. I would tell myself every Monday that this was going to be the week that I got back in shape. Monday would come and go, I wouldn’t get my workout in, I’d indulge in an extra dessert, and tell myself that I’ll get back on it next Monday. Then next Monday would roll around, and I’d go through that cycle again... and again... and again.

A mindset shift is eventually what helped propel me forward to getting back on the right path. I started seeing the pounds come off, but my strength was barely improving. That’s when I realized it wasn’t just about losing weight; I needed to get stronger, feel better, and actually enjoy the process. The turning point came when I shifted my focus from just trying to look better to wanting to perform better—both in the gym and on the course. That’s when everything clicked. I stopped chasing quick fixes and started building a plan that worked long-term.

Spending hours in the gym...Repeating the same plan...and seeing little to no results

I see too many well-intentioned golfers training hard without the results to show for it

Hey, I’m Matt – Doctor of Physical Therapy and the founder of Barbell & Birdie. My journey helping golfers began in the Biomechanics Lab at my alma mater, San Jose State University, where I discovered my passion for optimizing movement and performance for golfers. After earning my Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), I had the incredible opportunity to complete a residency with Stanford's Orthopaedic PT program, working alongside some of the foremost orthopaedic experts in the world. The mentorship and expertise that I received from education and training has shaped my approach to helping athletes stay strong, resilient, and pain-free. Now, based in Houston, I remain committed to helping golfers of all ages elevate their game with the same level of dedication and expertise.
